Hedgerow Campaign 2017/18 exceeds target!

Over 8,000 trees and hedging whips planted!

Our resident Arboriculturist Conrad Evans reports ‘This winter has proved to have been the fourth wettest but mildest, according to the met office statistics, with February having been the coldest for many years!

However due to a great effort from JTFL staff, ably helped by two temporary employees, a magnificent8,424 trees and hedging plants were planted this year; 70 x standard trees, 427 x whipped size trees and 7,927 x hedging whips, equating to 9.8 km in length.

Our Jersey hedgerow Campaign accounted for a total of 4,985 plants, comprising 290 x trees and 4,695 x hedging whips and measuring 6.6 km. The work was carried out between Rue des Landes in St.Peter and La Route du Francief in St.Brelade. It was the third consecutive year we’ve planted here, specifically to help our bat species.

In order to offer islanders the opportunity to buy native tree and hedging saplings (2-3 year old, 40-60cm tall “whips”), we offer a range of species to suit most environmental conditions as part of our new cheap tree scheme.

More than 1,000 tree saplings have been purchased including Common Oak, Wild Cherry, Beech, Scots Pine and Rowan. The hedging proved the most popular with more than 5,000 saplings bought. A selection of materials to help nurture these plants is also available and we look forward to increasing numbers next planting season.

As always, we have been wonderfully supported in various ways by many in the community over recent months’.
